We were in Paris. There were van loads of police round the Place de la Republique. We saw on the news a group of sans papiers had sought asylum in a church. We decided if we could we'd find the vigil outside the church the next day, but in the night the cops stormed the church. It was particularly ironic because that summer, Disney had released the cartoon of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" with its sympathetic portrayal of the outsider Esmerelda. The French weren't that impressed with the talking gargoyles either, I recall.
