So... I usually used to say I wrote this because I went looking for traces of Samuel Beckett, & hoped his ghost might knock at the door of our hotel room one night, because it looked just the sort of place Sam might once have stayed in. But I found this song instead. That's not strictly true. I had just read 2 biographies of the great Sam, but the song is secretly animated by my anxiety that everything about my life might change when I became a father. But that's not very resonant & i am sure if i had just written about that, Barb Jungr would never have wanted to do such a magnificent version of it. I like this one too, though, with its backwards accordeon, & there was really a man feeding the pigeons, though it probably wasn't broken hearts really, more likely broken baguettes. Life & Art eh?
