about

The Big Wheel - CD, released 1999 IRR036
The Second XI - cassette, released 1999 IRR037 (?)

"The Big Wheel" was the first time I recorded with the sublime magnificent Miranda Sykes & the sublime Saskia Tomkins, otherwise known as the St Trinian's String Quartet. We went on to make another couple of albums, & gig as the RJ3, before they both wisely went on to better things (Show of Hands & Canada, respectively). I really enjoyed our time together, & this album is a great beginning.

As well as Miranda & Saskia, there is accordeon from the superb Philip Hoessen. I met Philip through the "Gentle Men" song suite I wrote for the 1997 Passendale Peace Concert. He played accordeon for Vera Coomans, one of the finest singers on the planet. And there is the great Leon Rosselson gracing the album with some of his modestly excellent guitar playing too.

"The Second XI" - it's actually 12 songs - was a cassette only release anthology of songs that didn't quite fit for one reason or another with the songs on the CD. Some of them turned up on the "Tony Blair: My Part In His Downfall" double CD a few years later. Some of them stayed as they were, diary entries recording random passing thoughts & moments.
